DIY Mason Jar Oil Burner

I had an impromptu day off of work on Friday so that was pretty unexpected.  Hell yeah!  My new garage freezer was delivered which I am totally excited about!  Oh I did not tell you about my new freezer purchase yet?  My bad!

I finally bit the bullet and went and purchased one a couple of weekends ago.  I've been eyeing one for a while now but kept waiting for it to go on-sale.  It has- a few times- but I was waiting to see if it would go lower on-sale.  It hasn't.  It was originally $649 and shockingly after shopping around to all of the big box home stores- the cheapest was at Best Buy.  I bought it during the 4th of July savings event so it was on-sale for $552.  They were also running a special that if you used your Best Buy card- you'd save an additional 5% off plus have free financing for 18 months.  Showing a little boob got me free shipping and free haul away (a combined cost of $90) so for the grand total I paid $527.  Not bad.  It ends up being about $30 a month that I will be paying.  Not bad at all.  Delivery was supposed to be between 10:30am and 12:30pm yesterday and they showed up at 10am and were done within 15 minutes.  Super nice guys.  Here is what I had going on before:

And here is what I have now!!!

I spent a little time last night emptying out my kitchen freezer and putting stuff in my new one.  Now I can actually see what I have in there!  Plus I can't even begin to tell you how much I am going to love buying frozen pizza again!  That's the bad thing about side by side refrigerators.  You can't fit hardly anything in them.  Well now I have the space to get what I want and not have to worry about if it's going to fit when I get it home.  Woo hoo!!!

But back to the project at hand.  I have seen a couple of cute DIY mason jar projects on Pinterest recently.  I pinned one that I thought would be super easy and fast to finish.  Here was my "pinspiration" that I based my project off.

I decided that mine were going to be meant for outdoors so I was making mine into a tiki torch/citronella kind of thing (minus the tiki torch) rather than just a scented oil burner.

On my last trip to Target I saw tiki torch citronella fluid and wicks.  So I picked them up hoping that I would be able to convert them into what I was thinking.  I also had a couple smaller blue mason jars just sitting around waiting for them to be made into something special.

I started by smashing the glass on the inside of the lid.  These things are probably worth money and here I am going all Chris Brown on it.

Once I got rid of the broken glass I started poking a hole in the tops of the lid with a screw driver for the wick to fit in.

After a quick trip to Lowe's I picked up some pieces of copper to fit into the hole so that when the wick burns it's not directly on the lid.

See how the top part is a little wider than the bottom?  I'm so smart.  That way when I push it through the hole it won't go all the way through.  Genius.

Then I filled my jars with oil, pushed the wick through the copper, screwed the lid back on and lit that bitch on FIYA!!!!!!

One last thing I need to do is spray the lids oil rubbed bronze and they will be done!!  But now I can sit outside and not have any bugs all up in my shit.  SWEET!!!

  3. I made something similar to these but filled with fake flowers to pretty it up and I made my own torch fuel because I thought all tiki brand oil was yellow and I wanted clear so my flowers would show through. Is that bitefighter kind clear?

    1. Hi Lori! I bet the flowers look great in the jar! The regular tiki fluid is that orange-yellow color. This one is clear but I will say- a year later it's starting to turn a slight yellow-ish color. But I'm thinking that's more because it's been sitting in the jar for a year. :)

  4. I am wondering about the coupling you used. When looking for one at my local Home Depot, what I found was between $8 and $13 dollars each!!!! Surely there is something else that can be used that is cheaper. I am planning on making 12 of these to scatter around my back yard. I certainly cannot pay $8 for each of them, Any advice?
    Thanks, Kim

    1. Hi Kim!
I got them from Lowes and I know I didn't pay more than a couple bucks for them. I believe I got them in the plumbing department where all of the copper plugs were. Hope that helps!

  5. Did you glue the copper pieces on? How do they stay put? These look great!

    1. I did not glue the pieces on. The hole that I cut out was luckily tight enough to hold the piece in place. I'm not sure how glue would work though with the heat on the copper piece. Probably best not to use it and make sure that the cut out fits the copper piece snug. Good luck!

  7. I've had them going for a couple hours at a time and they've stayed lit. Still enjoying them two years later!!

  8. I did this but my wick burned down really fast...did you soak your wick or anything? How often did you have to pull more wick through the hole?
